Raymond R.R. Rowland, a veterinary expert on pig viruses at Kansas State University, said:
"The so-called weak positives often appear in tested pigs."Even with low levels of infection, it does not mean that the animals are infected enough to spread the virus. The virus may have entered a dead end, and the host may not be able to infect other people or animals.

Professor Edward Dubovi from Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine, who collaborated with a research team that discovered canine influenza in 2005, said:
"The dogs mentioned in the reports might indeed have low-level infections, which is not surprising." Humans occasionally transmit infections to pets and other animals, but usually, it's just an initial infection and doesn't spread further."
