So when puppies play with people, they like to nibble on your hand.
When the puppy is just a few months old, you might still find it cute when it nibbles on your hand, but when it reaches three or four months, you might not think so anymore because it will hurt!
Teach your puppy to distinguish between play
Puppies don't know that biting too hard can hurt people, but when you play with them, you can't avoid them using their mouths to bite. So before teaching them not to bite people, you first need to teach them that human skin is actually very sensitive, so even if they do bite, they need to be gentle.
Usually, by playing with other puppies, they will learn what pain is. When they get bitten and it hurts, they will yelp, and the one who bit them will let go. Through this interaction, the puppy learns to control the intensity of its bites, because only then can the dog continue to play with it.
So, when owners play with their puppies, they can effectively use the "yelp" method to help them understand the acceptable level of biting.
Time Out method
If the "yelling" method isn't very effective, you can add rewards and punishments.
Praise him gently when he's being good, and scold him as a "bad boy" when he's too rough.
But if it happens more than three times within 15 minutes, then you need to switch to the "TimeOut" method. When he lets go, take your hand away and ignore him for 10 to 20 seconds before continuing to play.
Next step, teach him that people are not for biting!
When a puppy wants to bite your fingers or toes:
- Use a toy instead.
- Distract it with a treat in your other hand.
- Play more games that don't involve direct hand contact, such as throwing and tugging toys.
After getting vaccinated, play more with other puppies.
If the puppy bites you, avoid pulling your hand away, because that will make it even more fun for them.Try using the "yelp" and "TimeOut" methods mentioned above.
The Australian SPCA has pointed out that since dogs are carnivorous animals, eating meat is the healthiest option for them.
