最熱5月 提防主子中暑

Beware of dog heatstroke during hot weather

We've heard of many pet owners taking their dogs on boat rides, causing the dogs to suffer from heatstroke and cross the rainbow bridge. This year is the hottest May on record, so be careful of your pets getting heatstroke.

Although due to the pandemic, everyone can't go to the beach or take boat trips, owners and dogs still shouldn't let their guard down when going out to play.

The hottest May in history
The weather is getting hotter and hotter. A few days ago, on May 23, the temperature even reached 36.1 degrees, and Tai Po recorded 37.1 degrees, the highest in May. If we consider the whole year, it ranks third, with the first and second highest occurring in August.

Choose the right time for a walk
This year's heat is unusually intense, so owners need to carefully choose the time to take their dogs for a walk, as the ground is extremely hot during the day and can burn their paws.If you must go out to pee, choose a shaded path. Also, remember to prepare enough drinking water for the dog.

High-risk pet bags
Nowadays, many malls are pet-friendly, and you might think it's safe to take your dog to a mall with air conditioning, but that's not the case. The weather is so hot that the pet bag will naturally be hot and stuffy. Just a short 8-10 minutes before entering the mall could be dangerous!

Heatstroke symptoms
If your dog shows the following symptoms, be cautious; it is very likely to be mild heatstroke.
1. Restlessness
2. Dizziness
3. Vacant eyes
4. Weakness
5. Extreme thirst
6. Red spots or rashes on the abdomen (blood becomes more viscous due to dehydration, blocking capillaries and causing blood spots)
7. Panting, excessive heartbeat (normal respiratory rate is within 30 breaths/min, heart rate is within 60-140 beats/min)

Severe heatstroke will exhibit the following symptoms:
1. Bluish-purple tongue (hypoxia)
2. Body temperature exceeding 40°C (normal dog body temperature is 37.5~39.5°C)
3. Difficulty breathing
4. Unsteady gait, sluggish response
5. Frequent blood in urine or hemorrhagic diarrhea
6. Limb spasms, convulsions, shock, coma (the dog has already entered a critical state, and normal cooling methods are no longer effective. Please immediately take the dog to the nearest veterinary clinic, remove all items from the dog, wet the paws to regulate body temperature, give the dog plenty of water, and keep the head low and neck extended to ensure clear breathing and prevent vomiting.)
