Do you all know how to read the nutritional labels on dog food?Do you know how to calculate the actual proportion of nutrients in dry food versus wet food?
For example:
Wet food A
Protein 8%
Fat 3%
Fiber 1.5%
Moisture 82%
Dry food B
Protein 26%
Fat 12%
Fiber 4.5%
Moisture 10%
You might think that the protein content of Dry Food B is much higher than that of Wet Food A, and that Wet Food A's protein content is below the minimum standard recommended by AAFCO, but that's not the case....
The impact of moisture content on nutritional components
The moisture content has a direct impact on the percentage of nutritional components, so to compare the nutritional components of dry food and wet food, the moisture content must be removed first for comparison.
Method for calculating protein:
Protein/[(100-moisture) x 100], so ->
Wet food A: [8/(100-82) x 100] protein = 44%
Dry food B: [26/(100-10) x 100] protein = 29%
In fact, Wet Food A has the highest protein content (44%).
So, we must remember to do the calculations to make an accurate comparison of the nutritional analysis of different dog foods, and not be misled by superficial data!
