Dogs who know how to sing

Apart from Malamute, there is a type of dog in the world whose bark sounds like singing, the real "singing dog."

The singing dog originates from the mountainous region of New Guinea, north of Australia, but its wild population has been extinct for nearly 50 years.

But recent research has revealed that a group of highland wild dogs was discovered near a gold mine in the New Guinea Highlands in 2016, and recent evidence further suggests that they share almost identical genetic traits with the New Guinea singing dog.

There are approximately 200 New Guinea singing dogs in zoos or shelters worldwide.

Dr. Ostrander, a geneticist at the National Human Genome Research Institute in the United States, said, "Due to years of inbreeding among the domesticated New Guinea singing dogs, their genome has degenerated, and the genome of the highland wild dog can help reveal how and why they have maintained their unique barking."
